About Emirates Jiu-Jitsu

What is Jiu-Jitsu?
"Brazilian jiu-jitsu is a martial art developed with the concepts of leverage and technique at its core. Because it is easier to dominate an opponent by using the floor to assist in balance and control , most of the training in jiu-jitsu takes place on the ground. Being able to dominate and neutralize a larger, more aggressive opponent is a hallmark of the art. This is achieved through ground control positions and leverage-maximizing technique.

What can Jiu-Jitsu do for me?
Jiu-Jitsu students develop a deep understanding of the mechanics of the human skeletal and muscular systems. Using this knowledge they are able to subdue an attacker without causing him injury, should they so choose. Acquiring these skills is not easy, and requires mental and physical effort on the part of the student. The rewards however, are great, and include massive improvements in stamina, strength, flexibility and mental clarity. In addition to this, social skills are improved as a result of interacting with individuals and the group as a whole.

What do the Classes consist of?
The sessions consist of a strength and endurance building warm-up, followed by an explanation by the instructor of a specific technical skill. Students then grapple with others of similar skill level in controlled sparring matches. Some have described jiujitsu as “chess on a mat”. It is an incredible workout that will challenge and strengthen the practitioner both physically and mentally.

What do I need to start training?
Please feel free to stop by our academy. You are more than welcome to watch one of the classes or better yet, try one of the free introduction classes. We are confident that jiujitsu will have a positive impact on many aspects of your life. Through it you will receive confidence, body-awareness and a new social circle of exceptional people.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

Brazilian JIU-JITSU is a martial art and combat sport that teaches a smaller person how to defend himself against a larger adversary by using leverage and proper technique. The Gracie family, the founders of Brazilian JIU-JITSU , modified judo and traditional Japanese jiu-jitsu to create the art. It contains stand-up maneuvers, but it is most famous for its devastating ground-fighting techniques. Gaining superior positioning so one can apply the styles numerous chokes, holds, locks and joint manipulations on an opponent is the key in Brazlian jiu-jitsu.

Brazilian jiu-jitsu roots began in the early 1900s. Esai Maeda, the chief of a Japanese immigration colony who was assigned to Brazil, befriended Gastao Gracie. Maeda, a former jiu-jitsu champion in Japan, taught the art to Gracies son, Carlos. In 1925, Carlos and his four brothers opened the first jiu-jitsuschool in Brazil. Carlos younger brother, Helio, adjusted the techniques to suit his small frame, and thereby created Brazilian jiu-jitsu. In the early 80s, Helios son, Rorion, planted the seeds of BJJ in the United States, where the art has become immensely popular.

United Arab Emirates

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is a Middle Eastern country of seven states situated in the southeast of the Arabian Peninsula in Southwest Asia on the Arabian Gulf, bordering Oman and Saudi Arabia. The seven states, termed emirates, are Abu Dhabi, Ajman, Dubai, Fujairah, Ras al-Khaimah, Sharjah, and Umm al-Quwain.

New sports are becoming popular alongside traditional camel racing. Examples of these new sports include golf, with two European Tour events in the country (the Dubai Desert Classic and the Abu Dhabi Golf Championship) and the world's richest horse race, the Dubai World Cup, held annually in March.

Aside from the international circuit events, the UAE has a healthy indigenous sporting environment with the local community participating in a wide variety of clubs and establishments. The seven emirates regularly compete in national leagues and cups in a multiplicity of sports that are controlled by specialized governing bodies.

The country itself is a prime location for sporting events. The high quality sporting venues (both indoor and outdoor), in addition to the climate, ensure the continuation of activities throughout the winter season. Construction of Dubai Sports City is underway to take advantage of these benefits, and to establish the country as a hub for sports throughout the world.
